This work by literary researcher Vũ Ngọc Phan was awarded the Ho Chi Minh Prize in its very first round (1996) in the field of folk literature and arts.
The book was meticulously compiled and researched by the author over many years, especially during the resistance war against the French colonialists and later during his time devoted to the study of literature, history, and geography. The work was completed in 1956.
Vũ Ngọc Phan passionately analyzed the unique features and profound value of Vietnam’s rich and diverse collection of proverbs, folk verses, and folk songs—including those from ethnic minority groups—alongside a carefully curated selection.
Notably, the book includes some of the earliest and most insightful research on Vietnamese folk songs, with broad and forward-thinking perspectives. It covers a wide range of traditional forms such as Trống quân singing, Xẩm singing, Quan họ Bắc Ninh, Ghẹo singing of Phú Thọ, Ví and Giặm songs of Nghệ Tĩnh, Hue chants, folk songs of Central South Vietnam, and those of Southern Vietnam, among others.
