"Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is one of the "Four Great Classical Novels" of ancient Chinese literature. To date, it has become a world-renowned masterpiece due to its extensive translations and widespread popularity.
Throughout its 120 chapters, Luo Guanzhong's writing brings to life a turbulent period of about 100 years in Chinese history: foolish and brutal emperors and officials, and people suffering from numerous hardships. The author expresses the people's deep desire for a peaceful, happy, and unified life, while also creating iconic historical figures of the era such as Liu Bei, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, Zhuge Liang, Cao Cao, Dong Zhuo, Sun Quan, Zhou Yu, etc.
The prose of "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is simple and clear. Scenes of snow at Wolong Ridge, water at Tanxi, fire at Red Cliff, and smoke at Huarong are all depicted as magnificent paintings.
Before Luo Guanzhong, the story of the Three Kingdoms had long been widely circulated among the people. In other words, the common people had long since created the iconic characters and historical stories of the Three Kingdoms. During the Tang dynasty, a poet, while writing a poem about children's playful stories, noted: "Some mock Zhang Fei for his blackness, others laugh at Deng Ai's stutter," isn't this an early portrayal of the boorish Zhang Fei? This proves that by that time, some characters and events from the Three Kingdoms story were so popular that everyone knew them, from women to children.
During the Northern Song dynasty, a writer also recorded that in the countryside, when children were noisy and mischievous, their families often gave them money to gather and listen to stories about the Three Kingdoms. At the same time, the commercial economy of the cities was more prosperous than ever, increasing the demand for cultural activities among urban residents, thus making the Three Kingdoms stories even more popular.
The difference between the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" and the "Official History" by Chen Shou (a historian from the Jin dynasty of China) lies fundamentally in its understanding of the people's love and hate, expressing the emotions and aspirations of the people. During the Northern Song dynasty, someone recorded a note saying: "When the children in the alley gathered to listen to stories about the Three Kingdoms, they frowned when Liu Bei lost, some even cried, and they were delighted when Cao Cao lost." This shows that for a long time, the people had reason for their opinions: they supported Liu Bei and disliked Cao Cao. This view was unanimous and unshakable, remaining unchanged to this day. "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" has most concentratedly and specifically reflected this opinion of the people.
