Dear readers, the book Composer Viễn Châu, 100 Outstanding Vọng Cổ Songs (Selected and Annotated) was first published by the National Political Publishing House, Hà Nội, in 2015. That edition reached composer Viễn Châu while he was still alive.
In 2020, Văn Hóa - Văn Nghệ Publishing House of Ho Chi Minh City released the revised edition, Composer Viễn Châu, 120 Outstanding Vọng Cổ Songs. This edition corrected some shortcomings of the first print and added 20 new songs, five for each category. By this time, the legendary artist Bảy Bá (Viễn Châu) had passed away. He departed on the 23rd day of the 12th lunar month in the Year of the Goat (February 1, 2016), coinciding with the traditional day of bidding farewell to the Kitchen Gods. During his lifetime, he wrote the piece Táo Quân Cải Lương Chầu Thượng Đế (The Kitchen Gods of Cải Lương Pay Homage to Heaven). Perhaps, the date of the passing of this king of Vọng Cổ and Cải Lương compositions was a fateful coincidence. We, the living, can only pray for his peace and happiness in the afterlife.
