Edward Miller's Misalliance: Ngo Dinh Diem, the United States, and the Fate of South Vietnam was first published in Vietnamese in 2016 by the National Political Publishing House. This edition includes additional research presented as an appendix, providing international perspectives on a turbulent period in Vietnam's history. It caters to the research needs of scholars, professors, graduate students, history and political science students, as well as readers interested in this subject.
In Misalliance: Ngo Dinh Diem, the United States, and the Fate of South Vietnam, author Edward Miller offers a nuanced and multi-faceted portrayal of Ngo Dinh Diem, presenting his interpretation of Diem's relationship with the United States. The book begins in June 1954, when Ngo Dinh Diem arrived in the bustling city of Saigon with a relatively modest reception as the new Prime Minister of South Vietnam, and ends on November 1, 1963, when Diem and his brother, advisor Ngo Dinh Nhu, were killed in an M-113 armored vehicle while on their way to the headquarters of the South Vietnamese military.
Drawing on 50 years of hindsight and extensive research from Western archives, as well as Vietnamese-language documents from the Republic of Vietnam, Miller focuses on the conflict between Diem and his American allies over the strategy for nation-building. Despite sharing the common goal of "anti-communism," disagreements frequently arose, leading to conflict and competition over core issues that Miller refers to as "the principles of nation-building," which shaped and ultimately controlled the entire history of the alliance between the United States and Diem from its inception to its downfall. According to Miller, it was the clash of visions and strategies between the Americans and Ngo Dinh Diem regarding the future of post-colonial South Vietnam that contributed to the volatile relationship between the U.S. and Diem, and the eventual fate of the Republic of Vietnam, culminating in the collapse of the U.S.-Diem alliance in 1963.
Based on his viewpoint and the sources he utilized, the author offers interpretations and assessments of various events and figures that differ from our evaluations, including assessments of President Ho Chi Minh, communism, the Southern revolution, the Dong Khoi movement, and Ngo Dinh Diem himself. Miller also analyzes the causes behind the failure of the Saigon government. Respecting the author's perspective and to facilitate research, we have endeavored to retain his arguments while emphasizing that they reflect his personal opinions.
