Unlike classical Tang poetry, Prison Diary employs common, colloquial language and leans more toward narrative rather than lyrical expression or strict tonal and semantic parallelism. Professor Phuong Luu identified this as an innovation in the "narrative quatrain" form, capturing both the daily life in prison and Ho Chi Minh's optimism and profound character.
